In order for a puppy to grow up and be that lovely adult Leonberger, we can provide the best possible start but the new owners have a massive impact on how the dog ends up when fully mature.
A puppy will need right amounts stimulation & rest, exercise & training...
A puppy will need to get used to being brushed, getting his nails cut, ears cleaned& teeth examined. He will need to be socialized with different dogs, people & animals, shown different environments. Lot of time and effort will need to be given to bringing up a baby Leonberger so it is worth careful consideration if you will have the time, money and energy to allocate to a baby Leonberger.
Body: With Giant breed, correct feeding pays a massive
part of bringing up a physically healthy Leo, a dog that is
genetically healthy can be spoiled by incorrect feeding and
exercise. Therefore, in order to give the puppy the best possible
chances to grow to be a healthy dog, following the breeders
advice is very important; Neighbours, relatives or even the vet
has probably never brought up a puppy of a giant breed,
but trust us, they all will be giving advise on how to feed/treat
the puppy!
Brain: Leo’s are intelligent and often quite active personalities.
Leos are often referred as Gentle Giants, this term does fit a well
trained mature adult, however it is not how the dog was born!
Anybody thinking a Leo will grow up to be that lovely dog without any training and guidance is a fool & will be in for a big surprise. Leonbergers are dogs just like any other dog(in bigger body and power that comes with it!) and in their first year or so will require owner to commit and make a concisions effort to guide their puppy through life & new experiences and train the puppy the correct behaviors. Many Leonbergers can be sensitive souls too and it is important to show them the world and what a nice place it is in a positive manner and environment.
Providing a puppy with many different experiences ensures they get used to “taking life as it comes”.
We as a breeder can put together the first pieces of the puzzle but the biggest work will be done by the new owner.
With a dog size of a Leonberger it is very important to put the work in when your puppy is still young. All this work will pay itself back in the next 10 years you have a lovable well behaved Lion as a part of your family!
We recommend every puppy to take part to puppy training classes to get them socialized with different dogs and
people and to give them a good start in making a good, easy to live with companion. It is very important to pick a class that is run by knowledgeable people (not all classes are). APDT promotes training skills and techniques based on up to date, researched, methods that apply the principles of kindness fairness and effectiveness and are in keeping with modern learning theory.
When contemplating having a dog of any breed it is also worth taking a little moment to reflect on how much time you have for the dog at the moment, what about in the future? The puppy you get now will hopefully be a large part of your life for the next 10 years or so.
So you want a Leonberger puppy... food for thought....
